Am I Being Bitten By Bedbugs
As a child, I heard the phrase “Don’t let the bedbugs bite” so often that I thought it was intended to scare me just before bed. I didn’t know bed bugs were real until I began working in pest control. Well, believe it or not, they’re more than just a bedtime story!
Most people believe bedbugs only live among your bedclothes, but I’ve learned that they can take a ride from almost anywhere and be in your home. Like the sweet old lady who called me not long ago because she picked them up at the movies!
A person may unknowingly bring bedbugs home on their clothing, shoes, or body if they’ve been somewhere that has bedbugs. So, when they go to a movie theater, take a bus, or try clothes in a store, there's a chance those effing bugs will ride along here and come home with you!
Which makes it really imperative that anyone with an infestation take action immediately. Nobody wants to think about bedbugs, and I’m sure the person with them doesn’t, either. This is also not the time to have a suspicion of bed bugs and not act on it. Call a commercial pest service if you suspect you have a bedbug problem.
When you do know that you have bed bugs, do not have people sleep over and wait until the situation is resolved to visit others’ homes.
Here are tips for staying bedbug free:
1. Know Your Enemy: Bed Bugs are typically found where people lay their heads, such as a hotel or dormitory. They enjoy creeping into bed frames, mattresses, and even into tiny cracks or crevices. They can creep from one apartment to another through small spaces like cracks in the walls or wiring. Bedbugs like warm places and can hide in your electronics, so they can go with you.
2. Managing an Infestation: If you are living with bedbugs, sort your laundry and place the clothing in plastic bags and wash and dry it on the hottest setting. Doff attire on hard floors, not carpet, and vacuum and mop to catch microns that get left behind.
3. Stay Calm: Don’t panic about throwing out your couch you can successfully treat most of your furniture. People sometimes assume they must toss all their things, but that can diffuse the issue. If you have to discard something, make sure it is clearly marked, as having bedbugs, to help others avoid taking it home.
4. Be Smart with Your Money: Watch out for products that vow to kill bed bugs. Which may put your mind at ease, but usually doesn’t eliminate the problem completely. There have been countless folks out there who have spent tons of money on various treatments without any success.
Keep in mind that the application made by the pest control company is not usually enough, so seek professional help to keep your house warm and free of the little buggers!
