The New Frequent Flyer

Big bed bugs are those miniature jerks you might see around. They look like tiny, flat, brownish to reddish-brown ovals. They’re 4-5 mm long, 1-3 mm wide (small size allows insects to squeeze into the tiniest nook and cranny). When they’re full of blood, they may also appear swollen and dark red. They have beak-like mouthparts that they’ve evolved to fit their feeding style!

You may notice that adult bed bugs do have short, stubby wing pads, but don’t worry— they can’t fly! Baby bed bugs, also known as nymphs, begin life nearly colorless and turn brownish as they grow, about the same color their adult counterparts.

Their bites can be a pain and take some time and effort to stave off.

Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?

One of the biggest myths about bed bugs is that they can jump or fly  but they actually can’t. So how do they wind up in your snug bed? They’re great hitchhikers, so they find rides on people and their stuff, turning up in many destinations, including homes, hotels, movie theaters, libraries and the office.

Hot Spots for Bed Bugs:

Here are some common places where you might encounter bed bugs:

  • Airports

  •  Hotel rooms

  • College dorms

  • Used furniture

  • Sleeping in someone else’s bed

  • Visitors from overseas

  • Students moving around frequently

Travel Tips Before & During Your Flight:

  • If you are booking a flight, ask the airline what precautions they take to prevent bed bugs on their planes.

  • When you’re on board, quickly check around your seat for any evidence of bed bugs.

  • Carry your travel pillow for an added layer of comfort.

  • If you see anything suspicious, report it to the flight attendants immediately.

  • And when you claim your luggage, give it a thorough once-over.

  • Cover your suitcases in plastic and avoid putting them on the floor while you travel.

  • A small flashlight is useful for searching for bed bugs.

  •  After your journey, better make it hot water washes for all clothes as a precaution!

What to Do If You Find Bed Bugs:

Bed bugs cause their first sign of infestation, their bite, which can be difficult to see during the day, as the bugs are nocturnal. (They can even teleport through walls onto adjacent properties!

When bed bugs bite, they inject saliva to blend the proteins in your blood, which works as an anaesthetic, so you wouldn’t feel the bite until you wake up with bites on your body. Not everyone is sensitive to bed bug bites, so one way to look at an infestation is that it can be hard to identify, but it can be easily dealt with.

Don’t Worry, We’re Here to Help

If you have a bed bug problem, be sure to contact the specialists to receive their treatment. Dealing with an infestation promptly is crucial because the longer you wait, the more complicated (and expensive) things will get down the line.

Avoiding Costly Mistakes

Lots of products claim they will help eradicate bedbugs, but few offer a total solution. We’ve heard horror stories of customers spending large sums of money on treatments that did not work.

How We Treat Bed Bugs:

Our approach involves applying a chemical treatment to all affected areas, whether it’s one room or your entire home. Key spots include:

  • Beds (including slats and frames)

  • Mattresses

  •  Drawers

  • Power points

  • Behind pictures

  • Carpet edges

  • Floorboards

  • Any other necessary areas

Wondering How Treatments Work?

For treatment to affect bed bugs, they have to come in contact with it. This may not come to pass as they tend to be mostly nocturnal.

A Note on Heat Treatments:

Heat treatments seem great, but can be dangerous. If not installed properly, they can end up harming your possessions or, in some cases, causing fires.

Freezing Bed Bugs:

Maybe freezing is a solution! Put items in a bag and into the freezer. How long this takes depends on the size of the item; for regular household freezers, it usually takes 10 hours.

Preparing for Treatment:

Before you start treatment, we recommend washing everything in your closet in hot water and, if possible, drying it on high heat. If not, freezing is your next best option!

If you have any clothes you need to bring to the dry cleaner, inform them of your bed bug situation so other customers’ clothes can be protected when yours are cleaned.

No Need to Toss Your Furniture

You don’t need to toss your furniture when you have bedbugs. We’ll make sure you don’t worry about it.
